Design and Construct a Retrofit Basement for Residential Client

Posted by: Association of Specialist Underpinning Contractors

In April 2005 the Basement Division of R. Withers Plc was contracted to design and construct a retro-fit basement beneath the attached double garage of a large residential property in Woldingham, Surrey.

The property owner and his family required suitable space to relax and unwind away from the pressures of everyday life. What better than a gymnasium/games room of 36 sq.m.

To construct the basement, traditional underpinning techniques were used to increase the depth of the existing foundations from 1.5m to 3.5m below ground level. This involved excavating through fill materials into the solid chalk strata below.

Once the underpinning was complete all soil within the footprint of the basement was removed and a new reinforced concrete floor slab was cast at the lower level.

Following the installation of the basement tanking system, the walls and floor were provided with insulation and finishes.

At ground level a new beam & block floor was installed supported by 203 × 203 × 86 Universal Colum sections. This was finished with a new dpm, insulation & screed to return the garage to its original use.

Withers know that this basement will certainly be fit for a purpose.
