Prevent Dry and Blocked Drains at College; Case Study

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
St Dominic’s College in Dublin was established in 1835. A major issue encountered by the caretaker on return from holiday breaks was the blockage of the old plumbing system. With the school population greatly reduced during the holiday period, there was not enough regular flow through the sewage system. The low gradient drains which have high flows during term time became dry and blockages common.

SOLUTION
To overcome the issue, a Drainwave unit was retrofitted upstream of the problematic area. The Drainwave collected grey-water via one of its ports and storm-water from the roof and patio area via the second port. The collected water builds up in the Drainwave unit, then surges through the main sewer line to stop blockages.

OUTCOME
Since the introduction of the Drainwave, no blockages have had to be cleared when the term has started. The caretaker commented that for a low capital investment, it has already saved the College costly maintenance fees to drainage contractors.
