Location: Beach Huts – Boscombe, Bournemouth Client: Bournemouth Borough Council Timing: 2009
In 2009, Bournemouth Borough Council launched an international competition for an iconic design for the four huts. Disabled beach users, design experts and local residents selected the winning entry ‘Seagull and Windbreak’, created by Peter Francis-Lewis and Brighton based a:b:i:r architects. Construction was by PUSH studios Ltd. Local disabled residents worked with DOTS Disability, a community interest company, to provide advice and expertise throughout the design and build process.
EcoChoice participated in this project providing a wooden beach access trackway, selected the best wood from FSC certified stock – timber that is responsibly sourced. Installing the decking timber on the beach provided safe use for the disabled accessing the beach in wheelchairs. For the future, the naturally durable, chemical free timber deck requires minimal care – ideal for this scenario at Bournmouth Beach.
Linda Nelson, local resident and user of the new huts:
“I had trouble getting in and around the old beach huts and I was constantly worried about falling over. These new huts and timber track take away all those old problems…”
