Green Roof Alternative to Conventional Roof: Case Study

Posted by: Lindum Turf

Lindum’s Wildflower and Meadow Grass Mat has been used on an innovative building ‘Landhouse’ in Somerset.

The Landhouse concept was designed by Mark Merer following a Land Art project in Seattle to develop a housing scheme in a rural area that blends into the landscape. The Landhouse in Somerton is a prototype and uses modular building techniques to make it cost effective to develop.

A green roof finish was used to help the building fit into the surrounding countryside and to provide an alternative to standard housing estate finishes. Lindum’s Wildflower and Meadow Grass Mat was chosen as the best option to make the building blend into the landscape – the aim is to make the Landhouse part of the landscape, not standing out from it. The completed prototype now contains two artists’ studios and the Landhouse project offices.

Mark Merer said; “We have been very pleased with the result from Lindum’s Wildflower and Meadow Grass Mat, particularly in the way it is has developed. We have had a lot of interest in the roof. The north side of the roof has developed differently to the south giving more visual interest. The Landhouse is really blending into the landscape now.”
