External Bifold Doors Help Achieve Zero Carbon House

Posted by: Livingwood Windows Ltd

The brief from our clients was for a compact, delightful house which was an exemplar of energy efficiency and capable of being autonomous. The house was to replace and existing poor quality 19th century workers cottage.

The house has been designed as a British take on Passivhaus, with the emphasis on low tech systems using a minimum of hardware, and designing out the need for heating and mechanical ventilation. Its performance in real life is evidence that this approach can work, and the owners are delighted with their ‘green’ house.

The house is orientated towards the south, and makes optimum use of passive solar gain in the winter, as well as benefiting from stunning views.

External bifold doors were installed. The slim timber sections created a large glass to timber ratio. This combined with the multi-point locking system provided a simple, strong & elegant feature to open up this house to the outdoors.
